Atom Editor Use Cases

Atom Editor is being sunsetted on December 15, 2022. Users will need to download a previous version of Atom before February 2, 2023.

GitHub detected unauthorized access to repositories used in the planning and development of Atom. Encrypted code signing certificates were exfiltrated, but no evidence of malicious use was found. As a preventative measure, exposed certificates will be revoked, invalidating some versions of Atom.

After the sunset of Atom, pre-built Atom binaries can still be downloaded from the atom repository releases. However, Atom package management will stop working and there will be no more security updates. Teletype will also no longer work, and deprecated redirects that supported downloading Electron symbols and headers will no longer work.

GitHub is retiring Atom to focus on enhancing the developer experience in the cloud with GitHub Codespaces.

GitHub thanks the community for their contributions to Atom and looks forward to building the next chapter of software development together.
